His next victim apparently is Helen (Mc. Mood and pace are well set, and story grips throughout. American Film Institute. Retrieved April 2. New Rochelle, New York: Arlington House, 1. Retrieved February 2. Retrieved February 2. The Spiral Staircase. The Spiral Staircase 1. Dorothy Mc. Guire) is a mute living in a town terrorized by a recent rash of murders. All of the murders are soon linked by the common factor: the victims are disabled women The audience is able to see the serial killer's psychotic, crazy eye right at the beginning of the film before he kills his first victim, which for the time period must have been scary as hell. Not a shower scene, but hiding in the closet!! No, there isn't gore or guts but The Spiral Staircase is still a very chilling thriller that involves some of the best horror sequences that have been used religiously since. Dorothy Mc. Guire's character, Helen Capel lives in a large mansion where she works as a caretaker to Mrs. Warren (Ethel Barrymore). Mrs. Warren is very ill and often is rambling but soon she is continuously warning Helen to get out of the house. SPOILER ALERT The house is full of many interesting characters including Blanche (Rhonda Fleming) who is the first to get murdered in the house. Helen finds her body after Blanche asked if she could leave with her because she just wanted to leave. She didn't think it was good for anyone to stay in the house, but oh, I just need to get my suitcase out of the basement. By this time I was laughing and screaming at the screen, basement?? Of course the spiral staircase at the back of the house leads to the servants quarters and then down to the dark basement. During movies like this, I always try to figure out . Of course there is always the character (Steve Warren played by Gordon Oliver) that they want you to think did it. He's always missing during the crimes and says things that make everyone eyebrow raise, but that's just it: eyebrows. The inside the audience is given, being aware of the crazy eye, also reveals the killer has a very dark brow, which Steve is blonde. Despite that I wouldn't say the murderer is totally obvious as there are many other characters and of course, they do leave an opening that it could be a total stranger. I won't say who it is, but I will say throughout the movie the killer is physically close to Helen. The Spiral Staircase is a nice old thriller everyone should at least see once.
